A.I.D.S.

( Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)

What is it?

Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV = the AIDS Virus) attacks and destroys the body's immune system, leaving victims open to life-threatening diseases.  Incubation period: 1-10 years.  NO VACCINE! At greatest risk: those who have or have had other sexually transmitted diseases, homosexuals, drug users, HIV infection rates are going up among heterosexuals, especially teenagers and women.

How do I get it?

By unprotected oral, anal, or genital sex with someone infected with HIV.  Spread by transfer of blood, semen and vaginal fluid in sex, sharing IV needles in drug use, having ears pierced or getting tattooed with unsterilized needles.  Infected women can transmit HIV to babies before, during or after birth.  No risk in giving blood.  Not spread by casual contact.

What are the symptoms?

bulletMany have no early symptoms.  Positive antibody test means person has HIV antibodies and is considered "HIV positive."  May not feel sick but is a carrier and dangerous.  Should get medical counseling.
bulletImportant to identify early signs of AIDS - related infections: swollen lymph glands, night sweats, fever, diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, possible thrush and shingles.  See a doctor.
bulletFull-blown AIDS: immune system shuts down.  Victim gets fatal "opportunistic" disease.

Is it dangerous?

VERY!!  Those in the U.S. estimated to carry HIV could develop full-blown AIDS unless a combination of medicines is prescribed.  Don't ignore unexplained cough, fever, rash, and headache.  Early diagnosis and treatment can prolong and improve quality of life.

Is it common?

Over one million Americans estimated to be infected with HIV.  Many undiagnosed.  Everyone is now considered at risk if they indulge in unprotected sex.  Users of intravenous drugs who share needles are risking their lives, too.

How do I get rid of it?

NO CURE!  Early testing is very important to diagnose and treat HIV with new drugs that are coming on the market with increasing frequency and improved results.  Not getting infected is still your best choice.

Remember............

Even if you test positive for HIV you can live an almost normal life but you MUST practice safe sex or no sex at all!!!!  ALWAYS USE A CONDOM and insist that your partner used a reliable contraceptive.  Condoms aren't 100% effective but offer the best protection for you AND your partner.  No deep kissing, anal sex, oral-genital contact.  Stay away from drugs and alcohol.
